Earn STEP Award

April 2011

Birch Grove Landscaping & Nursery, Inc. of East Aurora was recently designated with a “silver” Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) award by Associated Builders and Contractors, a national trade association representing over 23,000 companies from across the country and from all specialties in the construction industry. The program measure a company’s safety program progress and identifies ways to improve it, with the ultimate outcomes being a safer employee environment and more opportunities to bid jobs and lower insurance rates.

“Birch Grove is a company that places high importance on safety,” said Jason Burford, CEO of Birch Grove Landscaping & Nursery, Inc. “The STEP award signifies to our customers that they are working with a top-quality company. Not only does this award help educate our employees, but it opens our business to many opportunities.”

Birch Grove Landscaping and Nursery, which currently has 25 employees, was incorporated in Wyoming County in 1983. What originally began as a residential and small commercial landscaping company has grown to become one of the largest utility restoration companies in Western New York. The company also focuses on site work development and drainage; commercial and high end residential landscaping as well as outdoor livings spaces. After working for the company since 1986, Jason Burford and his wife purchased the company in 2006. Their vision and dedication to the business have taken Birch Grove to a higher level, transforming it into a “total grounds development company”.

Established in 1989, the STEP program was developed and written by contractors, for contractors. Incorporates both OSHA required safety data with self-assessment requirements to give a full, wide-ranging report on the entire nature of a company’s Safety Program. STEP participants beat BLS national averages in a number of areas, leading to benefits both when bidding for business and negotiating insurance rates.
